Super PAC pitches GOP donors on plan to stop Trump

Washington (CNN)Katie Packer, the Republican operative leading the anti-Donald Trump super PAC, 

Pitched her strategy to stop the Republican front-runner on a call with more than 50 GOP donors and power brokers Tuesday, including those with ties to the campaigns of Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker and Chris Christie.

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman, who was Chris Christie's national finance co-chair, and Brian Baker, a Republican operative connected to the Ricketts family, both spoke on the call, sources who were on the call told CNN.

It came on Super Tuesday, as Trump prepared to build on his lead -- and Republican loyalists increasingly fretted the prospect that Trump will run away with the nomination.

Packer, a veteran of Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign who launched Our Principles PAC, told CNN that "it concerns me" that Super Tuesday's results might not make her task any easier by knocking any Republicans out of the field.

But, she added, "if the worst-case scenario is we have to take it all the way to the convention, that's fine by me."

Still, it's not clear that establishment Republicans have settled on a single strategy to defeat Trump -- a reality Packer acknowledged.

"The question is, do people feel like that's best executed by giving to a campaign that they're invested in or another candidate's super PAC or our effort?" Packer said. "We're not particularly greedy about it coming to our effort, although we have had a lot of enthusiasm for our effort."

Packer argued that Trump has not faced a sustained negative advertising campaign. She pointed out that so far, of the $215 million spent on the air in the GOP race, only $9 million has been funneled into attack ads against Trump -- less than the $10 million Romney's campaign spent in a single week in a single state, Florida, to undercut Newt Gingrich in 2012.

"The reality is that there has been no sustained campaign against this guy until last Thursday," she said.

The new push comes after the group aired ads against Trump in Iowa, but couldn't raise money to continue after Trump's second-place finish there.

Packer's super PAC also ramped up its efforts this week by hiring ex-Jeb Bush campaign aide Tim Miller as its communications director.

The group is already on the air nationally with an ad that launched Tuesday blasting "Trump University." It's airing on CNN and Fox News, as well as more broadly in Florida, Illinois and Michigan -- three key states that vote later this month.

The attacks on Trump could sound like the 2012 hits on Romney's work at Bain Capital.

Previewing her line of attack against Trump, Packer said: "This guy isn't a conservative. He probably isn't even a Republican. He is a con man who is incredibly vulnerable in the general election once Democrats get their hands on him."

Marco Rubio Picks Up ‘Establishment’ Backers as GOP Field Narrows He Is Selling His Goods ! This Is Not What We Need, Hes just a Latino Obama!

Norm Coleman is free Thursday after all. The former Republican senator from Minnesota was supposed to co-host a fundraiser forJeb Bush, but the former Florida governor on Saturday gave up his bid for the GOP nomination after a limp finish in the South Carolina primary.  Now Mr. Coleman – who originally backed South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham before he quit the race in December — is throwing his support to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

Virginia Republican fundraiser Bobbie Kilberg, who joined Mr. Bush’s camp last week, said nine donors reached out Sunday morning to say that if she backed Mr. Rubio, they would, too

“That’s a lot of people to call you at 10 in the morning on a Sunday,” said Mrs. Kilberg, who originally backed New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s now-defunct presidential campaign. “I really believe (Mr. Rubio) is the only candidate around which mainstream Republicans can coalesce in order to win this nomination and win the general election.”

It’s the presidential version of musical chairs, as one candidate after another no longer sees a path to the nomination, goes home and leaves rivals jockeying for their cushion, so to speak.

Mr. Coleman and Mrs. Kilberg are among the first wave of major donors, elected officials and party leaders who are gravitating to Mr. Rubio after Mr. Bush’s exit. Despite his resistance to being lumped with the Republican “establishment,” Mr. Rubio is emerging as that wing of the party’s top choice.

These Republicans view New York billionaire Donald Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz as too extreme to win a general election, and they’re skeptical Ohio Gov. John Kasich and retired neurosurgeonBen Carson can win the nomination.

In Mr. Rubio, who narrowly edged out Mr. Cruz for second place in South Carolina, “Republicans got what they wanted and needed — a proven, experienced, and electable political leader to emerge as an alternative to Trump,” said Fred Malek, a major Republican donor who has not endorsed a candidate because of his fundraising duties for the Republican Governors Association. “Sen. Rubio has proven the ability to bring people together across the spectrum, not just on the far right.”

Mr. Rubio’s campaign said he picked up support from at least four other prominent donors, including former ambassador Francis Rooney, who donated $2.3 million through his company last year to the pro-Bush super PAC, and Chicago investor Muneer Satter, who gave $550,000 to that super PAC. Other new donors include coal billionaire Joe Craft and former ambassador and Florida developerJohn Rood.

But some donors are taking a wait-and-see attitude toward Mr. Rubio, said Walker Stapleton, the Colorado state treasurer who was co-chairman of the Bush campaign in Colorado.

“While Rubio has performed better than Jeb has in these early states, the question remains can he actually win a state,” Mr. Stapleton said Sunday. “From an investment perspective you don’t know if it’s worth it.”

Another top supporter of Mr. Bush, Texas donor Fred Zeidman, said, “I need to catch my breath and see who can beat (Democrat)Hillary Clinton. That’s the only goal.”

Endorsements from elected officials behind Mr. Bush are also starting to roll in for Mr. Rubio.  Nevada Sen. Dean Heller and Rep.Mark Amodei switched teams Sunday, two days before that state’s Republican caucus.

On Monday, three current and one former members of Congress from Miami who had been backing Mr. Bush – Republicans Carlos Curbelo, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario Diaz-Balart and Lincoln Diaz-Balart, are expected to throw their support to Mr. Rubio.

Also on Monday, Mr. Cruz is expecting to pick up an endorsement from one Bush fundraiser with long time ties to the Bush family, C. Boyden Gray, who was White House counsel to Mr. Bush’s father, George H.W. Bush.

Donald Trump responds to Mitt Romney's warning that his tax return could contain a "bombshell" in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper.

There might be a “bombshell” revelation to be discovered in Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump’s tax returns, 2012 party nominee Mitt Romney said Wednesday.

He also called on the entire GOP field to release their tax returns.

“I think there’s something there," Romney said of Trump's returns, "Either he’s not anywhere near as wealthy as he says he is, or he hasn’t been paying the kind of taxes we would expect him to pay,” Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto on “Your World.”

Trump responded later Wednesday on Twitter, slamming Romney for losing a winnable election, and calling him "awkward" and "goofy" when the governor asked for the real estate magnate's endorsement.

“The reason I think there’s a bombshell in there is because every time he’s asked about his taxes, he dodges and delays and says ‘well, we’re working on it.’ Hey, we’re not talking about the taxes that are coming due this year… We’re talking about taxes that already filed,” Romney, a multimillionaire businessman, said.

“This was an issue in my [2012] campaign. That’s why I’m so sensitive to it,” Romney said.

Romney was pressured by President Obama’s reelection campaign in 2012 to release five additional years of his personal tax returns after the Republican’s campaign said he hadn’t paid more than 13 percent in taxes in the previous decade.

“We’re going to select our nominee. We really ought to see from all three of these fellows what their taxes look like to see if there’s an issue there,” he added, also pointing to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, “I think in Donald Trump’s case, it’s likely to be a bombshell.”

“Perhaps he hasn’t been giving money to the veterans or to the disabled like he’s been telling us he’s been doing. I think that’s the reason there’s a bombshell [in his returns],” he said.

Cavuto pressed Romney as to whether the governor was indeed questioning the amount of Trump’s declared charitable donations.

“Well, if his taxes show that he hasn’t made any contributions to the disabled veterans… that would be a big issue, and I’m not saying that’s the case,” Romney said, “I’m just saying there are things that could be issues.”
